PAUL VERLAINE (1844-1896) was a major French Symbolist poet whose reputation,
alas, is still overshadowed by that of his temporary lover, Arthur Rimbaud.
Verlaine’s drawing of Rimbaud in the current issue most likely
dates from 1872,
when both were ensconsed in London, safely beyond the reach of Madame
Verlaine.
